Creating a Fishing Refuge
When the fishing town of Celestún, Mexico noticed a rapid decline in marine life like sea cucumber, lobster, and octopus, Esther Yerves helped find a way to take action. Working together as dive monitors and a surveillance team, the Celestún Fishing Refuge Zone was formed, to protect waters near the port from illegal fishing practices.

Building a Sustainable Community
Building a Sustainable Community Mentorship provides a way engage younger generations, and Esther Yerves has been a role model for multiple young divers in Celestún. Partnering with COBI, a nonprofit promoting sustainable solutions to conserve marine life across fishing communities in Latin America, young divers from Mexico learn from Esther and other volunteers with the Celestún Fishing Refuge Zone to implement conservation practices in their hometowns.
